Whoopi Goldberg Holocaust Comments Cause Backlash

In an interview with the Sunday Times on Saturday, Whoopi Goldberg made comments about the Holocaust that caused her to face backlash. According to NBC News, Goldberg said a “historically inaccurate statement about the Holocaust, which she claimed wasn’t originally about race.” Many people took to social media to comment on her statements made in the interview, one specifically being the Auschwitz Memorial. The Auschwitz Memorial posted on twitter one of the “first major statements made by Hitler with regard to the Jewish question,” where Hitler did in fact refer to Jewish people as a race.

On Tuesday, the actress apologized for the statement she made in the interview. Goldberg said “It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in. I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt and angered people.” Goldberg promised to educate herself more on the history of the Holocaust.
