Brittney Griner Comes Home

WNBA star Brittney Griner has just come home to the United States after a long nine months locked up in a Russian prison. Griner was arrested in a Moscow airport in February for attempting to transport illegal oils through the country; she was sentenced to nine years in prison. Griner made the trip back to the United States on Friday as part of a prisoner swap.

Griner was traded by Russia for arms dealer Viktor Bout, also known as the “Merchant of Death.” This trade has been controversial for many Americans, however, considering the U.S. Marine Paul Whelan has been in Russian prison for almost four years now. Whelan is happy for Griner’s release but wishes more would have been done to secure his freedom, especially after the sacrifice he made to serve his country.
