NYC Mayor Faces Backlash for Involuntarily Putting the Homeless in Hospitals

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has released a statement that the city will now be involuntarily hospitalized homeless people who are deemed mentally ill and “conducting themselves in a manner likely to result in serious harm to self or others.” Adams, a former police captain, feels a moral obligation to address the homelessness crisis seen in the city.

Officers and emergency medical workers would be able to remove people from the streets and into custody to be sent to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation. The hospitals the patients would be taken to would be directed to keep the patients for their treatment until they are on a set path for them to receive ongoing care.
