Appeals Court Denies Revival of Student Debt Relief
On November 30th, a federal appeals court denied the revival of student debt relief. According to NBC News, the appeals court “declined to put on hold a Texas judge’s ruling that said President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt was unlawful.”
The court was a New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, that rejected the request to put the student debt release program on hold. The program, under the Biden administration, would cancel around $400 billion worth of student loan debt across the country, and was prevented from going on by Fort Worth, Texas-based U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman. Pittman rejected the program, the Biden administration requested that Pittman’s decision be “paused,” and the New Orleans U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected that request.
