Purdue University Student Killed, Roommate in Custody

A Purdue University student has been arrested on a murder charge after calling in the death of his roommate. Ji Min “Jimmy” Sha made the call to 911 at around 12:45 a.m. about his deceased roommate, 20 year old senior Varun Manish Chheda. Sha was taken into custody within minutes of police arriving at the scene.

Chheda died of “multiple sharp force trauma injuries,” and his death was ruled a homicide. When being escorted in cuffs by the police, a reporter asked Sha why he committed the crime, to his response “I love my family.”

Chheda had been online playing video games with friends through Discord when he was attacked. His friends claimed to have heard screaming on the call. They woke to the news of Chheda’s passing the next morning. Purdue University Police Chief Lesley Wiete believes the incident was “unprovoked and senseless.”
