Republican Governors Want Biden to Withdraw Student Loan Forgiveness
Almost half of the United States governors have joined together to write and sign a letter to President Joe Biden asking that his student loan forgiveness plan be withdrawn. This plan cancels up to $20,000 in student loan debt for federal aid borrowers. The relief is for low income students who received the Pell grant, and those who did not receive it capped off at $10,000 in relief.
Majority of the governors who signed this letter are Republicans. They wrote “As governors, we support making higher education more affordable and accessible for students in our states, but we fundamentally oppose your plan to force American taxpayers to pay off the student loan debt of an elite few…” in the letter stamped Monday.
The governors signing off on this letter are also worried that institutions will now drive up their tuition prices, increasing inflation. Another worry is that the plan is not fair to those who have spent their lives paying off their student debt. The governors are challenging Biden’s power to pass this plan.
