Prosecutors Look to Put Shakira Away for 8 Years

On Friday, Spanish prosecutors announced that they are looking into putting Columbian pop star Shakira away for 8 years for alleged tax fraud. According to CBS News, Shakira is being charged with “failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014” while living in Barcelona.

It has been reported that on top of the 8 year sentence, prosecutors in Spain are looking to fine Shakira 24 million euros, which equates to 24 million US dollars. CBS News reported that Shakira “rejected a settlement deal offered by prosecutors, opting to go to trial instead.” The singer will be faced with 6 charges, and a trial date has not yet been set.
