Italy’s Prime Minister, Mario Draghi Resigns

On Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned. According to Reuters, Draghi’s resignation followed “the collapse of his national unity government, and sent tremors through financial markets”.

On the 25th of September, a “snap” election will be held. Reuters has reported that this will be the “first autumn national election for more than a century” in Italy. A new administration may take a couple of weeks to be sworn in, meaning Draghi may not be replaced until October. The Brothers of Italy, which is led by Giorgia Meloni, could possibly win in the fall election. It has been reported that if they do win, Meloni would choose who holds the title of prime minister, and could even choose herself.
