United States House Passes Bill to Protect Same-Sex Marriage
The House of Representatives has just passed a bill that will protect same sex marriage and will create federal laws to ensure its protection. The vote passed in the HOR with a 267 to 157 ratio, with over 45 republicans joining in with democrats on the subject. The bill will now go to the Senate, where at least 10 republicans will need to vote with the democrats in order for the bill to pass.
This bill was initiated after the increasing fear from the democrats that the Supreme Court would take a jab at same sex marriage after the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision.
The bill is called the Respect for Marriage Act, and also includes protection for interracial marriages along with same sex marriage. The bill also ensures that the marriages must be recognized federally if they took place in a state where it was legal.
