Steve Bannon Trial Set to Begin
Prosecutors have opened up the Steve Bannon trial with one simple statement, “The defendant decided he was above the law and that’s why we’re here today.” Bannon is on trial because he has been accused of defying a subpoena for the January 6 incident.
Bannon was former President Donald Trump’s chief strategist while Trump held office. It is believed that Bannon is withholding information regarding the January 6 raid, information that should have been released with the subpoena of the incident.
The justice department has charged Bannon with two counts of criminal contempt of Congress to start the trial. Bannon’s defense attorney Matt “Evan” Corcoran provided a strong argument that Bannon was in the crossfires of two lawyers negotiating the subpoena, without a final court date set for Bannon to appear. When Bannon didn’t appear for the subpoena in October 2021, it was because there was no set date for the hearing, not because he was knowingly ignoring the orders.
