Long Island Faces 5 Shark Attacks in Just Two Weeks

Five shark attacks have occurred along the coast of Long Island, New York within the last two weeks. The first attack happened on June 30, and the most recent was this Wednesday July 13. None of these attacks have been fatal.

The incidents have occurred off the coasts of both Nassau County and Suffolk County. The first attack victim was a 37 year old woman who was bit on the foot by Jones Beach. The next attack was only 4 days later when a lifeguard was attacked while performing a practice simulation on Fire Island.

Wednesday alone held two shark attacks just hours apart from each other. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said this may be an indication of a new normal for the Long Island community.
