Animal Rescue Groups Save 4000 Beagles Across the US

Nearly 4000 mistreated beagles have just been rescued from breeding facility Envigo RMS and are now looking for forever homes. The dogs were originally in Cumberland, Virginia, but a federal judge has approved a plan for the dogs to be sent to humane societies and rescues around the country to be adopted out.

Envigo RMS is a privately owned research organization that uses beagles for testing and also sells them out for research. The company was accused of violating animal welfare laws when federal officials seized the site and found nearly 150 beagles in acute distress.

A 2021 US Department of Agriculture inspection report showed many signs of neglect and animal abuse in the facility. The facility had faced over 300 puppy deaths without attempting to find the cause to prevent more from occurring. They faced violations for euthanizing beagles without anesthesia, not providing air conditioning, not giving enough food or water, housing them in unclean conditions, and not providing medical care. The animals are now being moved to local shelters in the surrounding states to give them chances at a better life.
