First Lady Jill Biden Receives Backlash for Comparing Hispanics to Tacos

On Monday, First Lady Jill Biden received backlash for comparing Hispanics to tacos while at a conference in Texas. According to BBC, Mrs. Biden was at a conference in San Antonio at the Hispanic “Quest for Equity”, when she made comments that the Hispanic community did not like.

Mrs. Biden said, “The diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength.” BBC reported that many did not like the reference she made, including The National Association of Hispanic Journalists, who said “We are not tacos…take time to better understand Latinos.” On Tuesday, the first lady’s press secretary responded to the backlash on Twitter, apologizing for the comments made in San Antonio. She said, “The First Lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.”
