FCC Commissioner Wants TikTok Banned

A US Federal Communications Commission leader has announced he wants TikTok banned. According to CNBC, both Apple and Google have been reached out to about “removing TikTok from their app stores over China-related data security concerns”.

One of the FCC’s commissioners, Brendan Carr, shared a letter written to Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, and Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, on Twitter. According to CNBC, the letter wrote, “TikTok is not what it appears to be on the surface. It is not just an app for sharing funny videos or memes. That’s the sheep’s clothing. At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data.”. The letter, which is dated June 24th, also requests that if the companies do not remove TikTok from their app stores, “they should provide statements to Carr by July 8.” as to basically why they believe removing the app is unjustified.
