Largest Freshwater Fish in the World Caught in Cambodia
On June 14th, the largest freshwater fish in the world was caught by a fisherman in Cambodia. According to CNN, villagers on the Mekong River helped the fisherman with the 661 pound stingray, which had a length of about 13 feet. It reportedly took around 12 men to “haul the stingray to shore”.
The villagers and researchers named the stingray Boramy, which means “full moon” in the Khmer language. The female stingray was released back into the river after scientists electronically tagged her in order to “monitor her movement and behavior”. CNN reports that the Mekong River stingray is endangered. Many biologists, including ex-host of “Monster Fish” Zeb Hogan, are excited by the news of the enormous stingray. Many believe it shows proof that the stretch of the Mekong River is still healthy enough to have animals living in it.
