Gustavo Petro Becomes Colombia’s First Leftist President

Gustavo Petro made history in Colombia when he won the presidential election on Sunday, making him the country’s first leftist president. Petro has promised reform during his election campaign, the test now is to see if he will follow through. Petro won by a slim margin, holding just over 50% of the votes to get him the victory over candidate Rodolfo Hernandez. The current Colombian president Ivan Duque has requested to meet with Petro to discuss some aspects of the transition and congratulate him on his victory.

After overcoming many childhood struggles, Gustavo Petro will take office as the new president of Colombia in August of 2022.
