Mariah Carey Sued for $20 Million After Songwriter Claims he Wrote “All I Want for Christmas is You”

One song, singer Mariah Carey is widely known for, has been claimed to be stolen from another artist. “All I Want for Christmas is You”, a song by Mariah Carey that has topped charts almost every year during the holiday season, is now the center of a 20 million dollar civil lawsuit. According to Entertainment Tonight, songwriter Andy Stone, claims that Mariah Carey took “inspiration from a song he wrote and recorded — by the same name — years before she released the mega-hit in 1994.”

According to CBS News, Stone is not only suing Mariah Carey, but also Sony Music Group, and her co-writer Walter Afanasieff for copyright infringement as well. Stone seems to have filed claims to the court as early as April 2021, but Carey did not respond to the claims in 2021, and has still not responded to the ones now. Stone co-wrote and recorded the song in 1989, where he claims the song made it to the Billboard charts in 1993. The following year is when Mariah “released” the song.
