Texas Social Media Moderation Law Gets Temporarily Blocked by Supreme Court
On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court temporarily blocked a Texas law that moderates and
restricts content on media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. According to CNN,
Texas said their proposition for the HB 20 law does not “violate the First Amendment because
the law “seeks to regulate tech platforms’ conduct toward their users, not the companies’
speech.”.
Opponents and tech industries against the law believe the opposite. They argued that the law
does in fact “infringe on the constitutional rights of tech platforms to make editorial decisions
and to be free from government-compelled speech.”. CNN reported that other states, such as
FLorida, have submitted a court filing in which they defend the law. Texas lost in the case with a
5-4 vote, a vote not in favor of the media moderating law.
