$2 Million Gold Tabernacle Stolen from Brooklyn Church
Earlier in the week, a Gold Tabernacle worth 2 million dollars was stolen from St.Augustine
Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn. According to the New York Times, on Saturday, Father
Frank Tumino entered the church and saw what was left after a burglar “cut open the altar that
housed the Holy Eucharist, stole the altar’s solid gold tabernacle and decapitated a statue of an
angel.”.
It is apparent that the thief used a power saw to enter the brownstone church to steal the
tabernacle. The tabernacle, made in 1888, is made out of 18-karat solid gold. It is covered in
jewels and is worth around $2 million. The New York Times reported that the police believe the
crime happened on Thursday or Friday at around 5:30 pm. The church had been closed due to
construction, which is why the cameras were not working as well. There has not yet been a
suspect identified by officials, and it is unclear whether or not a suspect was alone, or worked
with others.
