MacKenzie Scott Donates $4.2 Billion to Charity
Former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott has generously donated $4.2 billion of her fortune over the past several months. Scott said she wants to help those hard-hit by the pandemic, which she referred to as “a wrecking ball.”
The charities Scott contributed to include organizations working to support the “most vulnerable” to fulfill “basic needs.” The billionaire author and philanthropist, who ranks 18th among the world’s richest individuals with a net worth of close to $61 billion, said her focus is primarily on helping communities which have food insecurity issues as well as racial inequalities.
Scott empathized with the struggle being endured by those less fortunate, saying health and economic impacts of the pandemic have been worse “for women, for people of color, and for people living in poverty,” while billionaires have increased their wealth “substantially.”
In her post “384 Ways to Help,” published on Medium, Ms. Scott said she recruited the help of a group of advisors in making her decisions on where her charitable contributions could be the most beneficial. Her effort made donations to 384 organizations in every state across the country as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
