L.A. to Shut Down Power, Water at Large Gatherings
Yesterday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti authorized the city to shut down the power and water to any property where a large party or gathering is being held. The policy starts Friday and will be enforced for what Garcetti described as “egregious” situations when unpermitted large parties occur. More severe punishments could follow for violators, including permit prohibitions and revocation of certificates of occupancy. This will be enforced in cases of “large, close-contact, largely maskless gatherings, in direct violation of City Emergency Orders and County Health Orders.” This comes as City Councilman David Ryu introduced a motion yesterday to increase penalties for property owners who hold large house parties. It is unclear if Garcetti’s announcement is related.
